Bizarre pictures featuring people who have fallen to the ground and surrounded by scattered items have been flooding the photo- and video-sharing platform Instagram.

The latest Instagram frenzy is called the “Falling Stars Challenge”. It was reportedly started by Ramos Catharine, a contestant in Miss Ukraine 2016. Catharine shared a picture on her Instagram account on August 8, which shows her after she fell from the steps of a private jet. Catherine’s picture quickly went viral and produced many copycats, including plenty from online celebrities.

At first, the “Falling Star Challenge” was widely regarded as a way for the wealthy to flaunt their possessions. People were photographing themselves falling from limos, yachts and even their own private jets, lying face-down with luxurious jewelry, expensive tech and items from high end brands surrounding them.

However, as the challenge spread, it transformed from being a way of showing off to a creative way to show what people consider important in their lives.

The social media craze soon made its way to Weibo, China’s twitter-like social media platform. Posts with the #fallingstars# tags have been seen more than 1.37 billion times as of Monday afternoon. A major difference with the Chinese version of the challenge is that professionals from different industries participated to show their daily routine. These include a firefighter lying in front of a row of fire trucks and an officer at an emergency call center on the ground with documents thrown in all directions.

Ice Bucket Challenge(冰桶挑战)

Bill Gates participates in the Ice Bucket Challenge in August, 2014.

In 2014, Pete Frates, a former baseball player from Boston College who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease, created the Ice Bucket Challenge. It aims at promoting awareness of ALS and raising funds for patients and research.

Mannequin Challenge(时间定格挑战)

Hillary Clinton films Mannequin Challenge video with Jon Bon Jovi on Nov. 7, 2016.

The Mannequin Challenge was another online video trend that went viral. It was started by high school seniors in Florida in 2016. In a Mannequin Challenge video, people have to stay completely still - just like mannequins - while they get filmed by a moving camera. It became so popular that even Hillary Clinton, the former US Secretary of State and the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, took part. She filmed a video with several staff members and musician Jon Bon Jovi on her campaign plane with the added message of “Don’t stand still. Vote today”, in an attempt to appeal to young American voters.

Invisible Box Challenge (隐形盒子挑战)

The first “Invisible Box Challenge” video was posted on Twitter by a US cheerleader

Canadian singer Justin Bieber films an“Invisible Box Challenge” video

The Invisible Box Challenge began in December 2017. A US high school cheerleader posted a video on Twitter, in which she appeared to step on and over an invisible box. Other twitter users then tried to imitate her: Some made it look like magic but others got tangled up and fell over. The ‘invisible box’ trick went on to flood social media all over the world - even superstar Justin Bieber filmed himself jumping over an imaginary obstacle.
